Fashion Spotlight: Mary Tyler Moore

Although often credited with her signature smile and dancer's legs, Mary Tyler Moore is not as widely acknowledged for her fashion savvy. But this season, it is all about the seventies, and Moore is the poster girl. With her printed scarves, chunky jewelry, and wide legged trousers, Moore is the quintessential embodiment of 70's chic.

Mary Tyler Moore's outfit of choice was generally clean and simple separates, with one element of interest such as a bright blouse or a statement necklace. She often sported a scarf looped around her neck or a turtleneck; it was the 70's, after all.

Early in her career, Moore was often typecast for her sweet face and feminine shape in stereotypical female roles such as the sexy office assistant or the pretty but simple wife. The costumes for these roles were more overtly girlish than Moore's typical style, but still perfectly retro.

Either of the above outfits would translate seamlessly into modern fashion. The balance between unique and neutral elements is timeless. However, Moore was also a smart and strong woman who pushed through hardship throughout her life, and when she returned to television after a few years of movies, she made a comeback with a critically acclaimed self-titled show.

With her bright, clean, and flawlessly tailored and accessorized sense of style, Mary Tyler Moore created a classic look for the 70's that can be referenced for decades to come.

Here are some ways her style influenced the F/W 12/13 Runways:
